Presents or Presence?

What are you wishing to see under the tree on Christmas morning?  Some of you may hope for an X-box, legos, Paper Jam, an iPod, laptop, or clothes. But, no matter what you have under the tree, start praying today for God’s presence and His presents.

First, ask God to join your family celebrations–after all, it is Jesus’ birthday and He must attend His party. God is everywhere, sees everything, and knows all, so He can be at your house, my house, and across the globe on Christmas. Pray for His presence in your home.

Then ask for His presents. God expects you to ask for His gifts. He’ll provide gifts that can’t be wrapped, bought, or sold—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

You can also share these gifts with your family. Without spending any money, you can give out kindness. Holding a door open for someone, washing the dishes, cooking supper for your sick mom, and giving a sincere compliment are all acts of kindness. You could even compliment your granny’s fruitcake! (Say something true…like, “Wow you spent a lot of time making this.” Be nice, but you don’t have to suddenly start liking fruitcake.)

How can you accomplish giving? Pray and God will give you opportunities to help. The Bible tells us to be excellent givers. You can give the best present on Christmas–God’s presence and presents.

But just as you excel in everything . . . see that you also excel in this grace of giving.” 2 Corinthians 8:7b
