Read MoreRivers to the Sea
All the rivers flow into the sea, Yet the sea is not full, To the place where the rivers flow, There they flow again. Ecclesiastes 1:7 What if you made a little boat and set it afloat into a creek, stream, or river? Where would it go? Read a great book: Paddle to the Sea by Holling C. Holling. (Ask your parents to look for the DVD or watch it on YouTube.) Water is always moving and changing from liquid to vapor and back to liquid. If the temperature drops below freezing, water becomes solid ice. Learn more about the water cycle from this website:...
Read MoreMercer Caverns in Murphys, California
By Kathleen Denly Did you know Mercer Caverns was discovered on September 1, 1885 by a man searching for gold? The first tourists were lowered in by ropes and had only candlelight with which to view these enormous caverns. Worse yet, these candles were carried on boards held in the teeth of the tourists as they lowered themselves into the cave. Hmm. Ropes and flames. What could possibly go wrong there? Later, torches and different types of lanterns were used before electricity was finally threaded throughout the cave in 1901. Another interesting bit of the Mercer Cavern story lies in how they came up with the money to install stairs for tourists. Apparently, Mercer Caverns is home to an extremely rare type of aragonite, so they cut off a chunk of this stuff...

Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. Psalms 51:7 KJV Hey Kids: Have you ever seen anyone make soap? Do you know what the cleansing agent is in soap? I understand the Israelites did not know that they had soap, but the priest had the makings of soap every time they dumped the ashes from the sacrifices. To make soap, you need a fat and a source of lye. When water is poured through ashes, the water leaches out the lye from the ashes. When this water is added to a fat source, it will saponify, turning into a soft soap that will harden in a few hours. The priest washed themselves of the ashes after dumping them. The fat from the sacrifice was already in the ash. The priest were to keep themselves clean. They were...

And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith? Mark 4:39-40 Hey Kids: Have you noticed how weather affects your mood, your thoughts, your actions? I’ve noticed a windy day makes my kids loud and wild, just like the wind. Rain is usually calming unless there’s thunder and lightning. Then there’s a tingle of fear in the air. And snow – snow makes us happy and peaceful and HUNGRY! Seems all we do is cook and eat between the sledding. As winter turns to spring there are lots of variables in the weather. Try keeping a weather journal. Be sure to include how the weather...
Read MoreFruit of the Spirit Pt. 2
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Galatians 5:22-23 Hey Kids: Are you still working on that fruit bowl from last week? If you worked on the fruit of love, now may be a good time to try joy. We’re all excited about Christmas, so joy seems like an easy fruit to demonstrate, but in all the excitement it is also easy to lose our joy. Your parents may need a little more help in keeping the house in order. Maybe you are needed to watch over a little one while Mom bakes. Maybe Dad needs help with raking leaves or shoveling snow. Your parents requirements may not fit into your idea of Christmas joy, but you are needed. Children, obey your...
