Those Juicy, Juicy Apples

By Michelle Higdon

How good is a juicy, fresh apple?  Is it so mouth-watering you want to eat the whole thing right then and there?  Well, before you enjoy that super awesome apple that’s sitting in your hand right now, take a minute to think about where the apple came from and some interesting tidbits about the apple.

Tidbit Number One:  Apples come in three colors.  Yellow, Green and the oh-so-famous Red.  No purple apples, no pink apples and no black apples.

Tidbit Number Two:  When you plant apple seeds, you never know what color apple you might get.  Could be red or green or yellow.  The only way to be absolutely sure you’re getting the color you want is to take a branch from a red apple tree and attach it to a new apple tree.  Then that new apple tree will always produce red apples!

Tidbit Number Three:  Apples aren’t the only things that grow on apple trees.  In the spring, flowers bloom on the apple trees – pink or white flowers that signal apples are coming soon.

Interesting Tidbit Number Four:  Johnny Appleseed was a guy in the 1800s who walked all over the country, planting the seeds of apple trees.  He’s so famous for this that his real name – John Chapman – was changed to Johnny Appleseed.  And, he never saw most of the apple trees he planted.

Interesting Tidbit Number Five:  China produces more apples than any other country.  More than the United States and England and even Australia.  That’s a lot of apples!
