Life With ADHD

Life With ADHD

These days most of us have heard the term “ADHD.” We may even know someone who has this condition, but not all of us are clear on exactly what it means.   According to the National Institute of Mental Health: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (A.D.H.D.) is a brain disorder marked by an ongoing pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity that interferes with functioning or development. But what do all those big words mean? What is life like for someone who has ADHD? Well, my 9 year old son, Monkey, has ADHD so I thought I would ask him how he thinks ADHD affects his life. (No his name isn’t really Monkey but to protect his privacy we’re going to use his nickname today.) So, Monkey. We have talked a lot about ADHD and how it...

Who is God?

Who is God?

In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” Genesis 1:1 Who is God? Some people think God is a person that just comes in your life when you’re in trouble, sick, or need some help with something. That is very true, but that is just not all of who God is or what He is about. Some people don’t even believe in God. Let’s start from the beginning. (It’s a very good place to start) Genesis 1:1 (the first verse in the Bible, a book God made) says, “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” So let’s go back to the very beginning. The question is, “Who is God?” So we just heard something from Genesis 1:1 that God created the heavens (sky) and the earth. So we now know one thing...

Been Fishing?

Been Fishing?

Fear not; from henceforth thou shalt catch men. Luke 5:10b KJV   Fishing – what better way to spend a hot summer afternoon than fishing? It’s exciting to suddenly feel the tug on your line and reel one in. No matter how big or small the fish is, catching one puts everyone into action –snatching the line, grabbing a net, laughter and shouts; “Don’t lose him!” Even the fish is wriggling and jiggling. But to fish all day or night and catch nothing is boring and disheartening.   Peter, James and John fished all night and caught nothing – boring. Jesus asked to use Peter’s boat as a pulpit so the people could see and hear him better. After Jesus finished, he asked Peter to go out a little farther and let down his net. Peter told the Lord...

Greater Love

Greater Love

Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. John 15:13 Hey Kids: I dug out an old photo of my dad in uniform to share today. I remember as a child he would show us this picture and tell us a little of the things he did in service. He laid telephone lines and called artillery fire. He also taught us a little German. I thought kartoffeln was just another word for potatoes because he would just ask us to pass the kartoffeln. When I took German in high school, I learned I had actually learned bits and pieces of another language. Take a little time this weekend to find out who has served in your family. Ask mom and dad to dig out old photos and tell a few stories of your families sacrifice of love. Don’t forget to say...

Spring Cleaning

Spring Cleaning

Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. Psalms 51:7 KJV Hey Kids: Have you ever seen anyone make soap? Do you know what the cleansing agent is in soap? I understand the Israelites did not know that they had soap, but the priest had the makings of soap every time they dumped the ashes from the sacrifices. To make soap, you need a fat and a source of lye. When water is poured through ashes, the water leaches out the lye from the ashes. When this water is added to a fat source, it will saponify, turning  into a soft soap that will harden in a few hours. The priest washed themselves of the ashes after dumping them. The fat from the sacrifice was already in the ash. The priest were to keep themselves clean. They were...
