Creation Day 3

By Jen Lyons

For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities – his eternal power and divine nature – have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.  Romans 1:20

Hi, Eric here again.  I can’t wait to tell you about our first day on our field trip!  Don’t mind if I go into detail, it was so amazing I just have to.  Plus telling you about it is like going there all over again.  So anyway we walked off the elevator & I couldn’t believe my eyes – no marble columns here.  No old bones and jewels locked up in glass.  It was a RAINFOREST!  Can you imagine just getting back from McDonald’s and then stepping into a lush, green jungle?  There was a mountain with little waterfalls all over it, and mango trees and banana trees covered with fruit.  At first all I could hear were the squawking of parrots and macaws and it echoed all over!  Then I heard this weird sound I found out later were Red Eyed Tree Frogs.  I thought I was going to have a heart attack when a lemur jumped right in front of me!   Well, here comes Mr. D.  I’m outta here, for now.

Mr. D had a lot to say about plants, especially this one plant that moved when you touched it.  “Just yesterday,” Mr. D raised his voice, “we talked about our atmosphere, and how God made it to give us oxygen.  Well, did you know that our tropical rainforests produce about 40% of the world’s oxygen?  That’s a lot!  And another amazing statistic…..”  There was one specific plant Mr. D was on a mission about.

“You’re about to witness another one of God’s fascinating creations:  the “Touch Me Not” plant.  Scientifically known as the Mimosa pudica, it looks like a normal plant but sure doesn’t act like one.  I need a volunteer.”  A fourth grader named Mandy raised her hand.  She had leukemia and was leaving in a week on her dream trip to Ecuador, a gift from the non-profit “Make A Wish” Foundation.  Wearing a pink ball cap to cover her baldness, she smiled and stood near the plant.  “Put your finger near a fern leaf.”  As soon as she touched it, the leaves folded inward.  Mandy jumped back, “The leaves just moved!”  Mr. D started up again, “It’s as if they’re saying “Hey Dude!  Bug off!”  He waited for everyone to stop laughing, and continued.  “But that’s exactly what their saying, to predators that is.  Thank you Mandy!”  Mandy took off her hat and bowed for fun.  Everyone clapped and laughed some more.  She looked like the happiest kid around in spite of the cancer.  “Next we’ll look at the Pitcher Plant, a carnivorous plant that uses color, nectar, and even scent to lure its prey.”

Thank God today for his creativity, and for making such an interesting world for you to live in, including His incredible (sometimes unforgettable) handiwork.
