FIRE IN THE PIT

When the sun had set and darkness had fallen, a smoking firepot with a blazing torch appeared and passed between the pieces… (Genesis 15:17) (NIV)

Read Genesis chapter 15

Throughout the Bible, fire symbolizes God’s presence, power, and works. During the Exodus, God led the Israelites by day in a pillar of fire. While at Pentecost, tongues of flame rested upon the heads of believers, and they were filled with the Holy Spirit. Ultimately, this divine fire is intended to kindle a passion within us for God and for doing His will.

Now is the season for an outdoor fire pit. But use caution, and always have an adult nearby to monitor the fire and help keep it under control.

What you’ll need:

A long stick, preferably one made of metal. If a wooden stick is used, make sure it doesn’t catch on fire.
A fire can be built in a fire pit, or outdoors in a contained area. If a fire pit isn’t available, one can be built using bricks, stones, or rocks. First, clear the area of sticks and debris. Next, place building material (brick, stone, or rocks) in a complete circle. Make sure the stones are large enough to safely contain a fire. Then, pick up sticks and broken branches to start the fire with. If firewood is available, that can also be used once the fire is lit. Make sure an adult is nearby to monitor the fire pit.
