What is Biblical Archaeology?
Then the Lord rained upon Sodom and Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the Lord out of heaven; and He overthrew those cities… Genesis 19:24-25

Hey guys, let me introduce myself, my name is Angela the Archaeologist!

I’m a Biblical Archaeologist from the great state of Texas. A lot of people think archaeologists dig up dinosaur bones. That’s cool, but that’s more paleontology, not archaeology.

As a Biblical archaeologist, I study ancient peoples recorded in the Bible from the material remains they have left buried in the earth for thousands of years.

What are material remains you ask? Good question!

Materials remains are things like cooking pots, weapons, architecture and even toys! Biblical Archaeological sites are scattered all across the countries of Jordan and Israel, but are also in other countries like Greece and Turkey.

When traveling across the Holy Lands there are great earthen mounds that dot the landscape. These mounds are called “tels” in Israel, and “talls” in Jordan. These tels or talls are ancient cities built one on top of another.

I have excavated for years at a site in Jordan called Tall el-Hammam, and after 16 years of excavation we believe it just might be the Biblical city of Sodom!

Remember Sodom from Genesis chapter 19?

Sodom and its sister cities did so many bad things that God destroyed them by raining down fire and brimstone upon them.

We have found a lot of evidence at Tall el-Hammam that makes us believe it might be the city of Sodom.

And that is why Biblical Archaeology is so cool. You actually“dig into” the Bible!
