The Moon is Still There!
Three-year-old Silas pointed at the early evening sky. “Gampa! Is the Moon still there?”
He saw it last night, but not today.
“Should be.” We walked on. “Can you see the Moon now?” I asked.
Silas leaned around my legs, looking above the neighbor’s rooftop. He tilted his head left, then right. “Peek-a-boo, Moon!”
With daylight almost over, we walked around the house.
“What about now?” I asked.
“Gampa, your house is in the way.”
Silas pulled me toward the forest out back. Up the trail was a bright spot reflecting on a puddle.
“Gampa, look!”
Silas pulled me to where he’d seen the reflection but it had disappeared. “Where did it go, Gampa?” Deep in thought the toddler stared at the water. Then he looked up and drew in a startled breath. A huge grin quickly appeared. Shining through the tree limbs, the Moon lit up his pointing finger.
“See? The Moon is still there!” His smile changed to a smirk hearing my teasing voice. “GAMMMPAAA, I knew it wasn’t gone.”
Later that evening when I tucked Silas into bed, he said, “Gampa, I’m glad the Moon is still there. I like looking at the moon.”
“Me, too, Silas.”
As I closed his door, Silas saw moonlight sifting through the curtains.
Smiling, he fell asleep under one of a thousand heavenly lights that always remind us that someone who loves us a great deal finds joy when we smile up at His handiwork.
