Seasons of Remembrance, Grief, and Celebration…. The graduation cap hit the ceiling before anyone could stop it. Glitter rained down on the casserole dish. Nobody cared. Somebody’s grandma was weeping — not from sadness, but from the sheer, overwhelming fullness of the moment. Some seasons arrive so loaded with joy and grief and memory all at once that your heart simply doesn’t know what to do first.
Nehemiah 8:9-10 — “This day is holy to the LORD your God. Do not mourn or weep… Do not grieve, for the joy of the LORD is your strength.”
The people of Nehemiah’s day stood in the streets and wept as the Word of God was read aloud. They wept because they understood — perhaps for the first time — the weight of what they’d been given and lost and found again. And yet Nehemiah called them not to linger in their tears, but to feast. To share their food with those who had none. To let joy be the very thing that sustained them. God didn’t dismiss their grief. He transformed it.
June is that kind of month. Seasons come, and they go — some welcomed, others dreaded — and June carries nearly all of them at once.
We celebrate fathers: past, present, and future. We thank God for our Heavenly Father, the perfect Father for every imperfect one among us. Some dads are serving our country. Some are sick. Some are separated from the families who love them. Some are fully, beautifully present. In all of it, God fathers us.
We cheer for graduates — those adorable preschoolers and the not-so-little college seniors alike — all of them draped in caps and gowns, carrying futures we can barely imagine. And we observe Juneteenth, pausing to be grateful for a freedom that came — as it so often does in God’s story — later than it should have, but no less real for the waiting.
In all these moments, God is teaching willing learners. He shows us the value of family, community, and the people placed in our lives for every season. He teaches us to understand His gifts — life, His Word, His Fatherhood — and then to make the most of every moment He gives us.
This week, don’t let a single celebration pass you by without pausing to receive it as a gift from God. Call the father. Congratulate the graduate. Mark the freedom. And if this season carries grief alongside the joy — as so many do — remember Nehemiah’s word: the joy of the LORD is your strength. Let that be enough to carry you through.
What are you celebrating this June? We’d love to hear!
