Pepper Jasmine: Goat At Work

Pepper Jasmine

And God said, “Let the earth bring forth living creatures

according to their kinds—livestock and creeping things and beasts

of the earth according to their kinds.” And it was so.

—Genesis 2:24 (ESV)

Pepper On Lap (100)

Nana, the owner of a six-month-old goat named Pepper Jasmine, cleans the dirty straw from her pet’s living quarters once a week. Nana uses a pitchfork to toss the old straw into a wagon. Pepper Jasmine leaps into the wagon to watch the pile of straw grow into a mound inside the wagon.

Nana moves the wagon a few steps. After the wagon stops, Pepper Jasmine rears up on her back legs and lifts her front hooves high onto the barn wall. It makes a clacking sound.

Then Pepper Jasmine helps Nana find all the cobwebs that need to be swept away by sniffing at them. “Maaa!” says Pepper Jasmine, as if thanking Nana for cleaning out her goat pen.

Pepper Jasmine jumps back into the wagon to ride with Nana to the vegetable garden where Nana uses the straw to feed her plants.

When the wagon stops at the garden, Pepper Jasmine calls, “Maaa!” She jumps from the wagon. Her job to oversee Nana’s work is done until next week. Eventually, Pepper Jasmine will grow up and have a new job supplying lots of creamy milk for Nana and her family.

Thank you, team, for publishing my true account of Pepper Jasmine. Pepper gave birth to two bucklings on December 31, 2012. She is such a good mama goat that she nursed the buckling that lived until he was seven months old. Even though Pepper is a small goat, she gives us a quart of milk daily with a one inch layer of cream. We made yummy ice cream from Pepper’s milk once a week on hot summer days.

Pepper still takes charge of the goat pen, by telling us when things are not quite right. She let me know recently her salt lick had run out. Once I gave her more salt, she licked, licked licked her salt rock and was happy.

    God bless you all!

    Nana
