Hannah and the Dandelions
Psalm 96:12 (NKJV)
“Let the field be joyful, and all that is in it…”
“What is this? A day without freezing? Hurray! I can go outside and play!”
Hannah grabbed her coat and ran to Harold’s house.
“Harold, get your coat! Let’s go out and play hide and seek!”
The two friends raced to the field and played in the warm sunshine.
“I’m it!” Harold called as he put his head against a tree and counted. “Twenty-eight, twenty-nine, thirty! Ready or not, here I come!”
He turned around and saw Hannah bent over with her nose to the ground.
“Hannah, you’re not hiding! What are you doing?”
Hannah was trying to smell a tiny yellow flower growing close to the ground.
“Harold, look at this pretty yellow flower! No other flowers are growing yet. I wonder why it’s here.”
“It’s just a weed, Hannah. It’s not a flower at all,” Harold announced.
She shouted back, “Yes it is! And it’s beautiful!”
Across the field, Harold saw Gramma Hippo. Gramma was bent over looking at the ground too.
Harold thought, Are all girl hippos crazy?
He shouted, “Gramma, what are you doing?”
“Hi Harold!” Gramma called. “I’m looking for yellow dandelions for lunch. What are you two doing?”
“Stop, Gramma! You can’t eat that for food! It’s a weed!”
“My Mama ate these healthy plants every spring when she was a little hippo. Besides, I think this flower is a herald.”
Hannah laughed, but Harold did not.
He cried, “I am NOT a weed!” Hurt showed in his big brown eyes.
“What?! Harold, Gramma doesn’t mean you!” Hannah said quickly. “A herald is a messenger who shouts good news. This happy little flower is like a herald God sends to tell us: Rejoice! Spring is coming!”
“Hurray!” came a mumbled shout as Hannah looked up with a mouthful of dandelions.
Think About It:
- Have you ever thought something was just a weed, but it was actually special?
- What are some ways God sends us messages that good things are coming?
- How can YOU be like a herald and share good news with others?
Did You Know?
Dandelions are one of the first flowers to bloom in spring! They might look simple, but they’re very special. Bees love them, and they remind us that God cares about every little thing He creates—even the tiny yellow flowers we sometimes call weeds!
