God Knows Your Name

God Knows Your Name

God knows your name. Think about that for a moment.

Did you know the New Testament starts off with a long list of names that are difficult to pronounce?  It can be exhausting to read and you may be tempted to just skip over them. If you don’t skip them, you will get a lot of pronunciation practice. One of the names is Jehoshaphat. If you say his name real fast, it can sound like “Joe-so-fat”. That probably made you chuckle.

Because he holds fast to me in love, I will deliver him; I will protect him, because he knows my name. (Psalm 91:14)

Jehosophat was a mighty King. The reason is he was listed in the genealogy is because the names in Mathew 1: 1-25 are Jesus’ ancestors. Jesus’ ancestors were important because many people were looking for a Savior. In the Old Testament some big promises that we call prophecies were made that a Savior would come to the world through a certain lineage of people. These prophecies were all spoken of in the Old Testament about Jesus before the New Testament was written and the list of names helped proved Jesus was the Savior because those promises were fulfilled by Him.

We often don’t realize how important a name is in scripture. The Bible highlights that names have a lot of power and carry meaning especially the name of Jesus. When we speak the name of Jesus, it invokes His presence and authority in our lives. It’s through the name of Jesus that we have access to God, and we can be assured of living an eternal life with Him.

Names are important to God.  Did you know God knows your name?  Because God knows our name and we know His name, it means we have a personal relationship with Him giving us a special protection plan.  In Isaiah 43:1, God tells us to, “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine.”

Jesus, I am glad you know my name.  Thank You that I can call on your name to protect me because your name is powerful.
