From Where Does Our Help Come?

From Where Does Our Help Come?

I will lift my eyes to the hills; where does my help come from? My help comes from the LORD, Maker of heaven and earth! Psalm 121:1-2

I drove through the intensely beautiful scenery of western Maine. Mountains, waterfalls, and vast spruce forests; the region thrilled my soul. I know there is more to life than scenery. But the simple pleasure of experiencing joy and surprise still brings my heart close to the Almighty.

Whether I’m driving, motorcycling, or hiking, moments of worship dot the day with each passing scenic pleasure. Psalm 121 announces King David’s exhilaration as he becomes enthralled by the hills where his eyes are lifted. He asks the question, perhaps rhetorically.

But many would imagine rescuers bounding over the crests and into view, racing down to save the King from whatever impending doom was upon him. Was it the stronghold of Masada he had in his view? Megiddo? Hermon? Zion? Whichever, it wasn’t the hills or who might appear from them that David’s heart found courage.

No, it was beyond the mountains to their Maker where his rejoicing was set in motion! David’s source of courage, strength, and victory was his Creator. And who could blame him? After all, if God is powerful enough to sculpt hills and valleys, he surely can comfort a soul and provide whatever help is needed.

Prayer: Lord, may I look to You, Maker of heaven and earth, as my source of courage and strength. Thank you for your help today. Amen.
