Desert Wonder: A Family Adventure in Joshua Tree

Hiker in Joshua Tree rock formations

Joshua Tree National Park, located in southern California, is a stunning desert landscape where the Mojave and Colorado deserts meet. Famous for its twisted, spiky Joshua trees and towering rock formations, kids and adults alike will be amazed by God’s creativity.

Heart-shaped rock

Once inhabited by Native American tribes like the Cahuilla and Serrano, the area features ancient rock art to be explored along scenic trails. Families can also climb giant boulders while hiking through Hidden Valley, Skull Rock, or the Cholla Cactus Garden.

In the 1800s, miners arrived seeking gold, leaving behind weathered cabins and abandoned mines that still stand as echoes of the past.

Wildlife such as bighorn sheep, jackrabbits, and desert tortoises can be spotted among the cacti and creosote bushes. Springtime brings wildflower blooms throughout the landscape. Of course, the true desert treat is spotting a roadrunner—if you’re lucky enough to catch a glimpse!

Sunset view from Joshua Tree

A Joshua Tree desert sunset is pure magic. As the sun dips behind the rocky horizon, the sky explodes with soft swirls of pink, orange, and lavender — the silhouettes of the Joshua trees standing whimsical, with whispers of cotton candy floating across the sky. Whether you pitch a tent or just bring a blanket, as the dusk fades into night—gather under the stars for a stargazer’s paradise.

Whether you’re camping, hiking, horseback riding, biking, or just driving through, Joshua Tree offers 1235 miles of breathtaking nature, solitude, and adventure—the views are unforgettable.
