Are You Smarter Than Your Parents?

By Andrea Merrell

Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. Honor your father and mother—which is the first commandment with a promise— that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.

Ephesians 6:1-3 NIV

Are you smarter than your parents? Do you think you know all the right answers?

There’s a TV show called “Are you smarter than a 5th grader?” How do you think those 5th graders feel when they know more than the adults?  It probably makes them feel pretty good, right?

The truth is, kids today are very smart, and sometimes they do know more about some things than the adults around them.  My four-year-old granddaughter knows how to play certain video games, while I don’t have a clue. Some kids know a lot about math, science, and even computers.

Learning is exciting and you’ll be discovering new things and acquiring knowledge as long as you live. We never stop learning—that’s the way God created us. He also gives us parents and other adults to help train, equip, and guide us throughout our life. You may know more about some things than your parents, but your parents know much more about other things and they are there to instruct you and make you even smarter.

The greatest gift you can give your parents, grandparents, or any adults who love and care for you, is your love, respect, and obedience. Listen to what they say and learn from their wisdom and experience. It will help you know how to love, respect, and be obedient to God as you learn all the great things He has to teach you.

When you do that, your life will be happy and blessed.
