A World Watching
At Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, Mexican forward Julián Quiñones netted the first goal of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Thursday, June 11th, in a match against South Africa. Officially, the stadium seats 87,000 fans, and it’s no stranger to the tournament — this is its third time hosting, following 1970 and 1986. Outside the gates that same night, demonstrators gathered for various causes, well aware that eyes from around the globe were on that stadium.
It raises a question worth sitting with: do we, as believers, realize we’re being watched too? The way we speak and live sends signals about our hearts and who we really are — whether we’re standing on a soccer pitch or going about an ordinary day. This tournament alone spans 16 stadiums, 48 national teams, and 104 matches. That’s a staggering number of competitors chasing one trophy, and an even larger number of eyes locked on every play.
Reaching this level takes a lifetime of dedication — it’s grueling and thrilling all at once. Out of roughly 8.3 billion people on Earth, only 1,248 will take the field for the 2026 World Cup (48 squads, 26 players each).
Hebrews 12:1 tells us something similar: we too are surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses. It’s not only the people who know us personally who are watching — heaven itself, including God, is paying attention.
When God places a calling on your life, He asks for readiness, willingness, and a willingness to lay aside whatever gets in the way. Perhaps He’s shaping you right now to be a future World Cup athlete. But ask yourself — right now, today, are you running your race well? Even something as simple as honoring your parents matters here. Ephesians 6:1–2 calls this out as the first command paired with a promise: obey them in the Lord. Living in step with God means following His path, receiving His grace, and passing His love on to others.
We’re told to lay aside anything that slows us down. Picture a player stepping onto the pitch wearing his favorite hoodie during the match. Would he be able to compete at his best? What would his coach, his team, his family — even the watching world — think? There’s nothing wrong with owning a hoodie, but everything has its proper time and place.
Whether you’re picturing your team lifting the trophy this summer or picturing yourself on that field one day, remember — what you do today counts. Living in obedience to God is important now, as a young person, and for every chapter of life still ahead.
“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.” (Hebrews 12:1–3, NIV)
Never forget — there’s a crowd cheering you on as you run this race of life for Christ.
