The Slug Cake

The Slug Cake

By Faith Hatcher

The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.   1 Samuel 16:7 NIV

Do you want to know how my ninth birthday cake turned out? It looked like there was a brown slug with a bow on the top. What was supposed to be a really cute bear turned out looking funny. The icing was runny and dripped down the whole cake.

Even though it looked odd, the cake was delicious. Sometimes what we eat doesn’t always look good but it tastes great, just like the saying, “Don’t judge a book by its cover.” People can be the same way. Sometimes people look strange, but inside they are really nice. God tells us to look at a person’s heart and not the outside, just like He did when He picked David to be king.

Think about the boy in the back of your class that always sits alone. Kids make fun of him about the way he looks, but he could be really nice inside. The next time you meet someone who looks different, try to get to know that person before you judge him.

And when your cake looks as bad as mine did, eat it anyway. You might be in for a surprise.

Faith, you are a very wise young lady. What a great post!! I hope other kids and adults read this and remember it. We would be so wise to look at the heart of a person and not the exterior.

Faith, what a great devotional. Thank you for sharing it with us. Thank you for the reminder that we need to look at a person’s heart and give everyone a chance and not reject them just because of their outwardly look. Keep on shining for Jesus!

And sometimes, when you’re gorgeous on the outside…kind of like you…you’re just as beautiful on the inside too.

Faith, I enjoyed your devotion and thought about all the cakes I made my girls when they were growing up. Some of them turned out like yours, not pretty but delicious. This devotion will help us remember that God made people different and they are perfect in His eyes. We are to love them all. I look forward to reading more from you.
